On April 10, 2013 the Iguana Building exploded caused by a leak in one of the
propane heaters in the building.
The flash fire that occured blew the walls away from the foundation
and the door off the building.
The propane to the buildings was turned off and
the couple of places within the building
that were on fire were quickly put out.
The animals were removed from their cages and relocated to other enclosures.
While we were assessing their burns we noticed that the building had re-ignited.
There was a strong north wind blowing and within a few minutes the building
and the tool/supply building next to it were fully involved.
The Snook volunteer fire department arrived quickly and a second call was put out
to the Sommerville volenteer fire department.
They were able to save our home, and most of the Serpentarium.
Most of the roof, one wall and part of another wall of the Serpentarium were destroyed.
The Iguana Building and the tool/supply building were a total loss along with
all of the Sanctuarys tools and supplies for future expansion of the Sanctuary.
Members of Vets without borders came out to help with the clean-up.
The new buildings are arriving. The Iguana building is the first to arrive.
The new buildings continue to arrive.
The Snake building is the next to arrive. It's the biggest
one at 45' long, 8' wide and 9' tall.
The new buildings have been delivered and are now in place.
The red building is the new tool shed. The building on the right is the new snake building.
The building in the back (can only see a small part of it) is the Iguana building.
The building on the left is our storage container, it's been there for years.
The first load of rebuilding supplies arrive.
